Professional Learning Community

Professional Learning community (PLC) is a method to foster collaborative learning among the colleagues within a particular field. In order to improve teaching skills and academic performance of students PLC was constituted on 28th January 2019, in our DIET. The PLC conducts in every second and forth Friday of every month.

Objectives of PLC

  • To improve the knowledge and skills of Teacher Educators through discussion and reflection in a democratic learning environment.
  • To establish a sustainable professional development of teacher educators based on a spirit of enquiry, reflection and dialogue.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

 

A PLC meeting was held on 9th November, 2020 for the discussion section-2 of NEP2020 i.e. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy. The topic was presented by Mrs. Smitashree Biswal (TE) through PPT in presence of Principal and all staffs. The presentation was followed by a discussion focusing on its status at current situation and its implementation at school level through DIET-CRC linkage. All the staff members reflected on the vision of NEP2020 on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy. Following points are discussed during presentation.

  1. Aim of NEP, 2020
  • Universalisation of Access– from ECCE to secondary
  • Ensure Equity and Inclusion
  • Bring back out-of-school children.
  • Attain SDG4 goals of retaining all children in school until completion of secondary education.
  • Focus on 21st century skills in teaching, learning and assessment in education.
  • Improve Quality of achievement of learning outcomes- Foundational Literacy and Numeracy(FLN)
  • Particular emphasis on the development of creative potential of each individual.
  • Focus on develop cognitive capacities, social, ethical and emotional capacities and disposition.
  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.1)
  • Foundational Literacy and Numeracy means the ability to read and write, and to perform basic mathematical operations with numbers.
  • Various governmental and non-governmental survey indicates that a large proportion of students in elementary schools (over 5 crores ) have not attended foundation literacy and numeracy.
  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.2)
  • The highest priority given to achieve universal foundational literacy and numeracy in primary school by 2025.
  • A National Mission on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy will be set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD)
  • All states/UT governments will prepare an implementation plan for attaining universal foundational literacy and numeracy.

 

  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.3)
  • Emphasis is given on filling teacher vacancies.
  • Employing local teachers who are familiar with local languages.
  • Pupil-teacher ratio(PTR) of under 30:1
  • Areas having large number of socio-economically disadvantaged students, PTR of under 25:1
  • Focus on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of teachers to impart FLN.

Redesigning of Curriculum

  • The preparatory and middle school curriculum must include continuous formative assessment to track, individualize and ensures each student’s learning.
  • Teacher Education and Early grade curriculum will be redesigned with more emphasis on FLN
  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.5)
  • 3-month play based readiness programme for all Grade-1 students.
  • ‘School preparation module ‘ will be developed by NCERT and SCERT
  • School preparation module ‘ contains activities and workbooks with learning of alphabets, sounds, words , colours, shapes and numbers etc
  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.6)
  • Availability of National repository of high quality resources on Foundational literacy and numeracy on DIKSHA portal.
  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.7)
  • One-on-one peer tutoring. Every literate members of the community could commit to teach one student/person.
  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.8)
  • Public and school libraries will be expanded to build a culture of reading across the country.
  • Digital library will be established
  • A National Book Promotion Policy will be formulated to ensure the availability and accessibility of quality books in different languages across the country.
  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (Section-2.9)
  • The nutrition and health (including mental health) of children will be addressed.
  • Providing healthy meals and the introduction of well-trained social workers, counsellors and community involvement into the school system.
  • All school children shall undergo regular health check-up for 100% immunization.
  • Health cards will be issued to monitor the health and fitness of students.

The meeting ends with a discussion on plan of action for implementation of foundational literacy and numeracy through DIET- CRC linkage.

  1. Formation of DRG group including all DIET faculties and two resourceful teachers (one from literacy and other from numeracy) from each block.
  2. Orientation of CRCCs and DRG group(Teachers) on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (NEP, 2020 section-2) through virtual mode.
  3. Capacity building of DRG group from SRG group on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy
  4. Capacity building of BEO, ABEO, CRCCs and teachers on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy by DRG group.
  5. Material (Activity books, workbooks, digital contents etc.) preparation on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy at block level.
  6. Implementation of activities through on-line teaching learning process.
  7. Continuous professional development of CRCCs and teachers on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy through periodic discussion both on-line and face to face mode.
  8. Orientation of SMC members and parents on importance of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy.
