District Institute of Education and Training (DIETs) were envisioned in the National Policy of Education, 1986 (Revised 1992), and were created by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to strengthen elementary education and support the decentralization of education to the district level, under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Teacher Education.

       DIET is known as the nodal agency for providing academic and resource support at the district and grassroots level for the success of various strategies and programmes undertaken in the areas of elementary education.

     DIET Khordha,was established in 1989 after up gradation of  Secondary Training School, Khordha. Since then DIET has been undertaking initiatives for organizing different activities to create an academic sphere in the district.
